Luz Rios President of the Board Community Liaison My name is Luz Mireya Rios and I have lived in the Lykins neighborhood for more than 25 years, a single mother of 2 sons and 2 daughters who have grown up in this neighborhood and I already have 6 grandchildren, so we have witnessed the different changes in our neighborhood, fortunately more good than bad, I feel proud to be part of the neighborhood association and contribute my grain of sand to make our neighborhood a beautiful, safe and healthy place. Fai Beal Secretary of the Board I moved here Christmas Eve 2019, directly into the city shut down for the pandemic. Immediately I became involved with Lykins Neighborhood Association, wanting to learn how to fight for a better life, not just for me, but also for my neighbors. Since beginning my work in Lykins, I have successfully assisted community art projects, housing rehabilitation, civic and health education courses, and am learning national standards for meeting management and board organization. I have built relationships between other neighborhood organizations and leaders in city hall to advocate appropriately for what our residents need. I am a renter and know the struggles of yearly increases and the fight to save or buy your first home. I fight for us all. We all deserve better. Robert Ontman Housing & Development Committee Chair Hello everyone, my name is Robert Ontman. I am the third generation of my family to grow up in the Lykins Neighborhood after my Grandpa Joe who was an engineer on the railroad and my dad who was a teacher and a military chaplain. I have seven children, most of whom are grown, but still live in the Lykins neighborhood with their families, including grandchildren, who are making the streak five generations in Lykins. My wife and I are active member at Kansas City Baptist Church at 40th and Walnut and I volunteer with the Milestone Youth Center at 12th and Bales. It is exciting to see all the collaborations and diversity in the neighborhood and how we all work together towards common goals, especially to revive the housing in the area along with the hearts of the people. I serve as your housing and development committee chair in this process. Wayne Whisler Member at Large Information coming shortly. Ben Wells Vice-President of the Board I have had the pleasure of serving for two years on the board. I have lived in Lykins for 3 years and the historic northeast for 7 years. I treasure our architecture, diverse comunity, and our small businesses and restaurants. I initially got involved in the neighborhood to try to take action on littering and illegal dumping by becoming involved in cleanups. As a board member I try to bring a practicalist approach to further the things that help build and maintain our comunity such as: affordable homes for hardworking people, development of vacant lots and structures to fight blight, and safe parks for our citizens. Leticia Torres Treasurer of the Board My name is Leticia Torres. I’ve been a Lykins resident for over 10 years. I grew up here and have witnessed the neighborhood’s changes, both the good and the challenging. Wanting my work to be meaningful and make a real impact is what pushed me to get involved in neighborhood efforts and community work. I am dedicated to advancing equitable redevelopment that expands opportunity and protects affordability. My hope is that Lykins continues to grow into a safer, more connected, and supportive place where families feel proud to live and local businesses can continue to thrive. Ray de la Cruz Sergeant at Arms Information coming shortly.
